Why to eat Dragon Fruit during Dengue Fever?


Fear comes first when we hear Dengue Fever but it is very easy to tackle when we know the remedy for it. Here I have discussed in detail about dengue fever and how dragon fruit helps to overcome it. Eating Dragon Fruit will help to recover from Dengue Fever.

Dengue is viral infection transmitted by the biting of mosquito (Ades aegypti female mosquito). It is a day biting mosquito found in tropical and subtropical areas. They present in indoors mainly in living room and bedrooms. They breed in polluted water and small storage of water at home.

Dengue transmitted by patient to mosquito to healthy person. Dengue symptoms develop within 3-14 days after bite. Dengue disease is epidemic in 112 countries in the world and 150 million cases of infection. Dengue infection affect 89% of children those are under 15 year of age.

Dengue is Hemorrhagic fever. Dengue shows symptoms like fever, headache, skin rashes, body pain, nausea and vomiting, which reduces intake of food makes patient week. In prolonged shock cases Dengue reduces blood platelets, increased blood urea and plasma lipid concentration reduces.

There are DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4 main four serotype virus of Dengue found world wide. Dengue Viruses have four structural and seven non-structural proteins. Envelop protein is involved in protein assembly and enter into host cells and neutralizes the antibodies.

To combat Dengue there is no medicine. Doctor’s always advice patients to drink plenty of fluids & to have plenty of fruits and proper healthy food etc.    

Here comes the role of Dragon fruit in Dengue Fever
Dragon fruit is an exotic fruit belong to cactus family. It is native to Mexico, South America and Central America. Dragon Fruit is also referred as pitaya, pitahaya or strawberry pear. Dragon Fruit has bright reddish pink skin with green scales and white pulp with black tiny seeds. Farmers grow different colors of fruit skin and pulp, majorly white pulp fruit are grown all over the world.

These tiny seeds of Dragon Fruit are edible and contain high amount of fatty acids like linolenic acid, 2-acetate propanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, nonanoic acid and has many other bioactive compounds. Fatty acids compound are involved in binding to the envelope proteins and restrict entry of virus to other cells and by activating antibodies, increase immune responses, this research carried out by Sushmita H. S. and co-workers in 2018  and published in world journal of pharmaceutical sciences.

Dengue fever if it prolonged, in rare cases it may affect the liver functions. Antioxidants present in the Dragon fruits are Betalalins, Hydroxycinnamates and Flavonaoids keep your liver organ cells functioning and remove harmful free radicals.  Dragon Fruit detoxify your body’s mechanism means removes toxic substance which is main function of liver.

Dengue is also called as bone breaking fever and Dragon fruit contain good amount of vitamin C which restore the bone strength. It stimulates antioxidants activity and improves cellular immunity which keeps you away from metabolism linked sever diseases.

Dragon fruit contains high amount of iron which meets 8% of your daily requirement of iron. Vitamin C which is present in dragon fruit helps absorption iron into your body to boost hemoglobin.



It contains good amount phosphorous. Phosphorous helps to repair every damage cell in our body. Fruit also contains protein and fiber that increase metabolism and maintain cardiovascular health.

90% percent weight of fruit contains water which reduces dehydration and improves digestion.
